Our wonderful friend and tennis companion, Shirley Stewart, passed away on Saturday 3rd January, 2015 after becoming ill and going into hospital just before Christmas 2014. Her daughters, Maureen and Jeanette, were with her along with good friend Leonie was with her at the hospital much of the time.
The Honour Board reminds us that she was President in 1979, 1980 and 1982 but she was also on the committee for many years. She was a regular and strong competitor in the team playing Saturday competition as well as partnering many of us very successfully in social doubles events. The mid week tennis group started up initially thanks to Shirley – that group has gone from strength to strength with well over 20 players now.
Many of us regarded Shirley as a true friend and very much part of the fabric of Port Melbourne Tennis Club. Over many years, Shirley contributed so much to the creation of happy memories of good times spent running around a tennis court always followed by a cup of tea or a friendly chat. She played until she was well in her 80’s and very recently enjoyed her 90th birthday (Dec 8th, 2014).
When she finally stopped playing, she was delighted to pass it on her racquet to her great granddaughter who I understand is loving using it and is showing that it still works very well.
So Shirley, Life Member of PMTC, great scone maker, very able tennis player, and wonderful friend to many, many people. We will miss you but we know that down the track, if we head to the En Tous Cas courts in heaven, that is where we are likely to find you.
